Learning Through Touch

This project’s objective was to investigate the concept of touch-based interaction and to better understand how it could be used more effectively to help children with Autism. One of the main concerns with autistic children is their difficulty with communication and social interaction. Our project goal was to develop an interactive application that enabled them to practice these skills. Our interdisciplinary team developed a touch-screen application that facilitated the learning of social skills in an interactive environment. By leveraging the technology and a large scale screen, a three-way dialogue between the responsive system and the two participants enabled a unique, simultaneous interaction between the autistic child and their caregivers. The result was an educational tool that taught the relevant topics of social behavior to children with autism through a multiple user, collaborative learning environment.
